A village in the Bavarian Forest. In 1944, the pregnant Afra Zauner returns there, to the confines of her parents' house, which she left years earlier to seek her fortune elsewhere. By the summer of 1947, she is dead, lying bloodied in the sparse living room. Johann Zauner has also had a difficult life: World War I, hard work as a day laborer, his marriage to Theres, which he always doubted and which remained childless for a long time, and then the birth of Afra. From the very first day, he believes that the Lord wanted to test him with this daughter, as Afra has always had a mind of her own, lied, and was rebellious and stubborn from a young age. Only faith has always given Zauner support, even when the Nazis came to power, whom he despised. Did he, a devout Catholic, kill his own daughter, who brought shame upon his family by having an illegitimate child?.
