Act 5. Tragedy. Two esteemed families in Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets, have been feuding for years. Due to the ongoing violence between them, Prince Escalus imposes strict penalties on anyone who disrupts the hard-won peace. Romeo, the son of the Montagues, is mistakenly invited to a masquerade ball hosted by the Capulets along with his friend Mercutio. There, he meets Juliet, the daughter of the Capulets. Rosalind, whom Romeo had just been unhappily infatuated with, is forgotten, as is Count Paris, whom Juliet is supposed to marry – the two fall passionately in love with each other. They vow eternal love and secretly marry with the help of Friar Laurence, who hopes that this union will reconcile the feuding families. During a chance encounter on the street, Tybalt, a cousin of Juliet, insults Romeo.
