The Swiss artist HR Giger (1940-2014) became famous primarily for designing the space monster in Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror film Alien (1979), for which he won an Oscar. The Alien is undoubtedly the star of Giger's extensive arsenal of biomechanical creatures, but it is just one of many hybrids of man and machine with which Giger populated our nightmares. These are beings of haunting power, terrible beauty, morbidly erotic intensity, and surreal fantasy.
