Product details

Throughout his career, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) changed his style and, with it, the entire course of art history. Starting from figurative and landscape painting, he increasingly employed colors and forms in a spiritual, emotional, and rhythmic manner, and is now regarded as the painter of the first purely abstract artwork.

Kandinsky was not only a practicing artist but also a teacher and theorist who infused his interest in music, theater, poetry, philosophy, ethnology, mythology, and the occult into his paintings. Together with Franz Marc, he founded the influential group "Der Blaue Reiter," taught at the Bauhaus, and produced significant theoretical works alongside his vibrant visual art, such as "On the Spiritual in Art." In this work, he advocated for the connection between painting, music, and mystical experiences, as well as the purity of art, which should move away from material realism towards an emotional expression primarily condensed through color.

This volume presents Kandinsky's most important works and showcases his repertoire of colors, forms, and feelings. The author traces the radical development of the artist and demonstrates how this paved the way for abstract expressionism.
