Product details

Volume 10 of the collected works, edited by Viktor Böll, introduces the period when the young author had already made a name for himself with his stories and his novel "House Without Guardians" and was now defining his themes and sphere of influence. Alongside a commentary on the uprising in Hungary, it includes the "Letter to a Young Catholic," the poetic essay "Language as a Refuge of Freedom," and one of the most influential books to this day, "Irish Diary." The volume also provides an unpublished review by Böll on Faulkner.

Volume 10 (1956-1959) includes, among other works: "Something Will Happen," Biographical Note; "Where Is Your Brother"; "The Revelation of the Asocial"; "Self-Criticism"; "Living for Language"; "Uprising of the Hungarians"; "The Risk of Writing"; "The Soft Heart of Arno Schmidt"; "In the Valley of Thundering Hooves"; "Journey Through Poland"; "Metropolitan Journal"; "A World Without Christ"; "The Discarder"; "Irish Diary"; "In the Ruhr Area"; "Balance"; "Letter to a Young Catholic"; "The Bread We Live By"; "Heroes' Memorial Day"; "A 47-Year-Old Turns 50: Hans Werner Richter"; "Language as a Refuge of Freedom"; "The Newspaper Seller." Commentary. All volumes of the Cologne edition.
