Product details
Margherita Spiluttini began photographing architecture 25 years ago out of curiosity and inclination. She was not aware that this decision would relaunch architectural photography in Austria after an era of ignorance. The scene of advanced architects and critics soon recognized the quality of her eye, leading to an increase in commissions and the spread of her reputation and work internationally. Despite her almost documentary style, she refuses any reference to reality in her work, calling her strategy "concrete." A person with a camera is at a certain place at a certain time to photograph what is visible, capturing all the random, atmospheric, precisely "concrete" circumstances. The pictures clearly indicate that they are "ornament," the two-dimensional epic skin of the appearance of the building, and never the full truth. Margherita Spiluttini is now one of the top ten in international architectural photography. In 1991, 1996, and 2004, she was prominently represented at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Her work and extensive archive not only store and form a comprehensive chronicle of Austrian architecture and important buildings by international star architects but also showcase her artistic standing through her free works "After Nature" and "Picture Stories." The "grand dame" of architectural photography continues to shape the image and media perception of built artistic achievements while remaining modest and selflessly pragmatic: "I only take the photos. And this effort bears no relation to what the architects have to achieve and accomplish." On the occasion of the exhibition "Margherita Spiluttini. Atlas Austria," which will be shown at the Architekturzentrum Wien in summer 2007, an independent book on her work and life will be published for the first time to document the broad spectrum of her contributions.
