The present volumes provide, for the first time in German, an overview of Spanish art, ranging from Late Antiquity through the art of the Middle Ages, the painting and sculpture of the "Golden Age," to the much-discussed contemporary art scene. Although Spanish art has made significant contributions to the European cultural landscape, it has almost been forgotten in Germany, likely due to the political isolation of the country after World War II. Only since Spain has begun to assert its place in Europe with determination has interest in its art started to grow again. This work offers insights into the history of Spanish art from Late Antiquity to the contemporary art scene. It primarily aims to spark interest in specific questions and facilitate entry into this field of research. Accordingly, the sections are divided into overviews that present key dates and facts, along with comprehensive annotated bibliographic references, and case studies, such as the Cathedral of Toledo, Velazquez as a portrait painter, or the architecture of Josep Lluis Sert. The authors—Spanish and German art historians from various fields—have long been engaged with the history of Spanish art and present here a selection of their research.
