Water-soluble oil pastels are soft, fatty pastels with intense, vibrant colors. These versatile oil pastels release color very easily and can be used in various ways. You can apply and blend them dry like regular oil pastels, but you can also mix them with water for watercolor effects. This is simple to do by brushing over the drawing or parts of it with a damp brush. You can also wet the pastels themselves or work on damp paper.
Oil pastels adhere to almost any surface. However, the color release is best on a slightly rough and porous surface, such as paper and cardboard. When mixing the oil pastels with water, watercolor paper is the best substrate. This paper has a special coating that reduces warping when water is used.
Starting can be difficult, especially when it comes to creating your own artwork. So, don't make it too hard on yourself at the beginning. Let your surroundings inspire you, come up with a still life, or use a photo.
