Author Information
Raymond Chandler, best known as the creator of the original private detective Philip Marlowe, was born in 1888 in Chicago and died in 1959. Many of his books have been adapted for the screen, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of crime fiction.

Summary
The Lady in the Lake is a classic crime novel by the master of hard-boiled fiction, now available as a Penguin Essential.

Derace Kingsley's wife ran off to Mexico to get a quick divorce and marry a Casanova wannabe named Chris Lavery. At least that's what the note she left for her husband claimed. The problem is that when Philip Marlowe asks Lavery about it, he denies everything and sends the private detective away with a flea firmly in his ear. However, when Marlowe encounters Lavery again, he doesn't deny anything.
