With Tankred Dorst's production, the "Ring" celebrated 130 years of history last year, marking a significant anniversary. Fourteen productions by twelve directors (only the brothers Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner directed twice) showcase the inexhaustibility of Richard Wagner's operatic tetralogy. Time and again, prominent opera directors have taken on the immense challenge of staging it, following the Wagner family themselves: from Patrice Chéreau and Peter Hall to Harry Kupfer and Jürgen Flimm. Nowhere else in the world can the connections between contemporary history and theatrical aesthetics be studied as they can in the Bayreuth workshop. Therefore, a look at the history of the "Ring" in Bayreuth is not only a unique chronicle of the performance history of Richard Wagner's most significant work but also a small history of the Bayreuth Festival.
