Until its destruction during the bombing nights from 1943 to 1945, Berlin was one of the most architecturally appealing capitals in Europe. The baroque and neoclassical grand buildings from its time as a royal residence stood in charming contrast to the palaces of the Gründerzeit, which were built in abundance after it was designated as the "Reich capital."
