Christian Schad (1894-1982) created some of the first artistic photograms and abstract photographs. The third volume of the catalog raisonné published by the Christian Schad Foundation in Aschaffenburg is dedicated to his "Schadographs." The first group was created in 1919 in Geneva, where Schad formed Dada Geneva with the writer Walter Serner. He arranged materials—such as paper scraps or lint—on light-sensitive paper and exposed it to sunlight shining through the window. The result is abstract compositions in the experimental spirit of Dada. The publication documents the 30 known early Schadographs as well as numerous Schadographs from the years 1960 to 1978 and the collage work created between 1965 and 1975.
