Understanding Orthographic Structures - Learning to Spell

To effectively prepare for lessons, the successful spelling workbook "On the Trail of Words and Sentences" (designed for students in grades 5 and 6) has been supplemented with "Solutions and Comments for Teachers." The authors take into account current findings from graphematic and orthographic didactics in the tasks. This includes orientation towards fundamental patterns of word spelling, such as words with open and closed syllables, syllable joint spellings, and the syllable-initial 'h'. Based on this, the phonographic-syllabic and morphological regularities of core vocabulary can be explored in class. Additionally, the tasks include orientation towards the syntactic function of internal capitalization in sentences within the German writing system.

Each task is preceded by a concise overview comment on necessary prior knowledge and learning objectives, allowing for precise application of the tasks. The methodological and subject-didactic foundations are explained by the authors in a separate chapter at the end of the teacher's workbook. For quick checks, solutions to tasks in the following areas are also provided: examining syllables and words, analyzing word components within words, investigating capitalization in sentences, and utilizing spelling strategies. The volume for teachers facilitates a differentiated, exploratory, and dialogic spelling instruction with the student workbook. This way, students gain insight into the writing structure of native words and can apply this knowledge to other words and sentences.
