We are often asked: What exactly are pit cloths? What is the difference to tea towels and drying cloths? Here is our explanation of the meaning of "pit cloth":
They were towels made of cotton or linen which were supposed to withstand extra heavy use. Originally very common in the Kaue (Kauen: A miner's changing room, usually right next to or above the shaft opening in a mine). The cloths were very popular here because they had a high weave density, which also helped to protect the food from dust (because at that time there were no plastic lunch boxes). Since in mining the hollow is often called a pit, this is how the cloths got their name.
Today, thanks to their robustness and absorbency, pit cloths are also very popular in the catering trade and in the household as dishcloths, drying cloths or for polishing glasses. Other advantages are that they are boil-proof and usually chlorine-resistant. Due to the patterning that is created during weaving, stains are also less noticeable.
