We are often asked: What exactly are "Grubentücher"? What is the difference between dish towels and drying towels? Here is our explanation of the meaning of "Grubentuch":
These are towels made of cotton or linen that are designed to withstand extra heavy use. Originally, they were commonly used in the "Kaue" (changing room for miners, usually located directly at or above the mine shaft). The towels were popular here because they had a high weave density, which also served to protect food from dust (as there were no plastic lunch boxes at that time). Since the excavation in mining is often referred to as a "Grube," the towels got their name.
Today, Grubentücher are also very popular in gastronomy and households due to their robustness and absorbency, serving as dish towels, drying towels, or for polishing glasses. Additional advantages include that they are boil-proof and generally resistant to chlorine. The pattern created during weaving also helps to hide stains more effectively.
