Living room lighting fundamentally serves two functions: it should support us in our daily lives by providing brightness and protecting our eyes from quick fatigue. Additionally, it should create the appropriate atmosphere in the rooms.

Today's lighting technology offers countless possibilities and ideas. However, a thoughtful plan is essential for implementation. This begins with having a sufficient number of power outlets and wall connections.

First, the room receives good basic lighting, which is controlled by a switch located directly at the door. After that, attention turns to the desired ambiance: art objects, reading areas, communication zones, or workspaces are each bathed in special light, giving the room contours through varying brightness levels.

Direct and indirect lighting

Direct light – such as the flame of a candle – evokes pleasant sensations, but it has the drawback of being poorly shielded and falling directly into the eyes.

For this reason, indirect light should be preferred, meaning a shielded light source that is reflected off walls and ceilings. To ensure that the light casts as wide a beam as possible, it should be installed at a sufficient distance from the illuminated surface. Wall washers should also be mounted at a height of at least 170 cm, so that the light source is above eye level. Lastly, the use of floodlights in small or low rooms should be carefully planned, as they could otherwise fail to achieve their intended effect.
