Living room lighting fundamentally serves two functions: it should support us in our daily lives by providing brightness and protecting our eyes from quick fatigue. Additionally, it should create the appropriate atmosphere for the rooms.

Today's lighting technology offers countless possibilities and ideas. However, a thoughtful plan is essential for implementation. This begins with an adequate number of power outlets and wall connections.

First, the room receives a good basic illumination, which is controlled by a switch located directly at the door. After that, attention turns to the desired ambiance: art objects, reading areas, communication zones, or workspaces are each bathed in a specific light, giving the room contours through varying brightness levels.

Direct and indirect lighting

Direct light – such as the flame of a candle – evokes pleasant sensations but has the drawback of being poorly shielded and hitting the eye unfiltered.

For this reason, indirect light should be preferred, meaning a shielded light source that is reflected by walls and ceilings. To ensure that the light casts as wide a beam as possible, it should be installed at a sufficient distance from the illuminated surface. Wall washers should also be mounted at a height of at least 170 cm so that the light source is above eye level. Finally, the use of floodlights in small or low rooms should be carefully planned, as they may otherwise fail to achieve their intended effect.
