Living room lighting fundamentally serves two functions: it should support us in our daily lives by providing brightness and protecting our eyes from quick fatigue. Additionally, it should create the appropriate atmosphere in the rooms.

Today's lighting technology offers countless possibilities and ideas. However, a thoughtful planning process is essential for implementation. This begins with having a sufficient number of power outlets and wall sockets.

First, the room receives good basic lighting, which is controlled by a switch directly at the door. After that, attention turns to the desired ambiance: art objects, reading areas, communication zones, or workspaces are each bathed in a specific light, giving the room contours through different brightness levels.

Direct and indirect lighting

Direct light – such as the flame of a candle – evokes pleasant sensations but has the disadvantage of being poorly shielded and falling directly into the eye.

For this reason, indirect light should be preferred, meaning a shielded light source that is reflected off walls and ceilings. To ensure the light casts a wide beam, it should be mounted at a sufficient distance from the illuminated surface. Wall washers should also be installed at a height of at least 170 cm so that the light source is above eye level. Lastly, the use of floodlights in small or low rooms should be carefully planned, as they might otherwise fail to achieve their intended effect.
