Strangely enough, under the project title "Leather Pants of an Eskimo Woman," these now legendary organic glass designs were created in the workshop of architect Alvar Aalto nearly 80 years ago. The unusual flower vase promptly won first prize in a design competition representing Finland at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. Each flower vase is still mouth-blown today, with Iittala relying on the expertise and skill of its craftsmen: it passes through no fewer than seven hands before the individual shape is created. What inspired the creator to the wave-like form of a flower vase remains unfathomable – yet it perfectly aligns with Alvar Aalto's general statement that "form is a mystery."
