Can a HEPA filter be retrofitted? It doesn't seem to have one as described.

Yes, this is possible at any time. The description says 1x filter (see under specifications). The HEPA filter (there are three different ones as far as I know) can be ordered as an alternative. The MI Air also reports when the filter should be replaced.
