From a technical perspective, the blind rivet consists of two components: the hollow rivet and the rivet mandrel. While with screws, clinching, and punched rivets the component must always be accessible from both sides, the special feature of the blind rivet is that only one-sided accessibility is required.

During the installation process, the rivet mandrel is pulled by the jaws of the setting device, deforming the hollow rivet until it reaches a predefined, secure fit in the component. Finally, the rivet mandrel breaks off at the designated point, the predetermined breaking point, and the remaining mandrel can be sent for recycling. The remaining rivet mandrel is the part of the mandrel that remains in the hollow rivet and can serve an additional securing function depending on the application.
