Before changing tires, it is also essential to check whether the tires show any damage or cracks. The tread depth should also be inspected. Legally, a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm is required across the entire circumference. However, a depth of 3 mm to 4 mm is recommended. Proper grip is particularly important in winter.

There are directional tires, which have markings on the sidewall indicating the rolling direction of the tire. These must be mounted accordingly. Additionally, it should be noted that tires on the drive axle wear out more quickly. Therefore, it is recommended to mount the better tires on the drive axle, as uneven tread depths can compromise driving stability.
