Lions are the largest big cats in Africa. Their fur is usually sandy-colored, and adult males have a dark mane.

Lions roam the African savanna in prides, which consist of related females, their cubs, and a single male. When a male reaches adulthood, he is expelled from the pride and must find his own group. Lionesses hunt in teams. Together, they can overpower large prey such as zebras, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, and even young elephants, but they also scavenge leftovers from other animals' meals. Lions sleep for up to twenty hours a day, and both males and females defend their pride against foreign intruders. A lion's roar is very loud and can be heard from up to eight kilometers away. Lions roar to communicate with each other and to deter intruders. Males and females have light brown fur. Males have thick, brown manes that grow longer and darker over their lifetime.
