White-tailed deer graze in the mornings and evenings. As herbivores, they feed on green plants and nuts. Deer live in small groups, usually consisting of a mother and her fawns. Males have magnificent antlers and live in small groups of three or four animals. Both male deer and does have reddish-brown coats in the summer and grayish-brown coats in the winter. Since they have very few natural enemies, deer populations can sometimes grow so large that they struggle to find enough food. Deer are ruminants like cattle, meaning they have four stomachs and chew their cud. This complex process allows deer to eat things like twigs that most animals cannot digest.
