9 items I’d actually buy for the garden

If you want to decorate your balcony or garden with the same level of care you put into decorating your home, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. These products bring style to the outdoors – so say goodbye to your campsite aesthetic.
Your garden isn’t merely somewhere to store weather-proof compromises. It’s a space that deserves just as much attention as any other in your home. The most beautiful outdoor spaces show what happens when you stop thinking of «outside» as a separate category. Take weathering steel that develops a layer of rust like a sculpture. Or lights that scream garden centre. And fabrics you actually enjoy snuggling in.
Here are my picks for an exterior that harmonises with the interior.
1. Wine coolers with a distinctive look
The Hat by Puik Design looks like an upside-down hat – and that’s exactly the point. Inside the container EPP reliably keeps wine and champagne cool. Available in black-and-white speckled or all black, it’s the perfect accessory if you want to make a statement even during an aperitif.

2. Wireless lighting
No cables, no compromises: 900 lumens, up to 20 hours of runtime and a remote control – Syros from Garden Lights beautifully illuminates summer evenings. It’s charged via USB-C, attaches with a hook or magnet, so you can hang it over a table, on a tree or on a pergola. Syros is also available in black and green.

3. A fun tablecloth
Soizic’s striped pattern from La Redoute Interieurs is subtle enough to go with just about anything. And distinctive enough to stand out. It’s made from 100 per cent cotton, 30 per cent of which is recycled. It’s machine washable up to 40 degrees and OEKO-TEX certified. The Soizic collection also includes bedding, pillowcases and placemats.

4. Watering can as a unique piece
Capi’s Matcha stands out with its mint green hue and clean lines — exuding more home decor vibe than garden tool. The can’s made in Belgium from durable HDPE, and has a 4-litre capacity for indoor and outdoor use. If this isn’t the colour for you, it’s also available in olive grey or black.

5. The cushion that stays outside
I’m not saying you should sleep outside, but you could. The Terrazza cushion from Hay is made of 100 per cent recycled polyester, is water-repellent and can easily withstand the summer outdoors. In addition to yellow, the cushion’s also available in green and grey.

6. Fairy lights with sphere shapes
Three light bulbs or thirty – it’s up to you how much you want to illuminate. The Taina solar string lights from Paulmann are available with three or six lights that can be connected together in any configuration. It bathes your patio or tree in warm white light at 3,000 Kelvin – without needing a power outlet. IP67 protection makes the lights rainproof, and the twilight sensor turns them on automatically. The light bulbs are sold separately and are replaceable.

7. Solar lighting that has character in the daytime
The Soft Spot solar lamp from Rosendahl does what most solar lamps can’t: it looks good even when it’s not lit. The circular design in Sky Blue is made from GRS-certified recycled plastic and charges during the day to provide mood lighting for 15 to 18 hours in the evening. Weatherproof down to minus 20 degrees. The red version is even more vibrant than the blue. If you’re looking for a subtle colour, mustard yellow could be a good choice.
8. Patio umbrella stand with style
The concentric grooves on Beliani’s Carezza stand are reminiscent of plissés – a pleating technique more commonly seen in fashion and lending this simple garden object a sculptural quality. The steel stand, with a powder-coated finish in brown or black, accommodates umbrellas of four different diameters, weighs 21 kilogrammes, and is correspondingly sturdy.
9. Fire with sophistication
