AMD has announced new mobile GPUs – the Radeon RX 6000M series. The laptop graphics cards come with RDNA-2 architecture. According to AMD, the flagship 6800M should be able to compete with the performance of the mobile Nvidia RTX 3080, even partly surpassing it.
AMD introduced three new Radeon RX 6000M GPUs based on the RDNA-2 architecture at Computex in Taiwan. They come with the following specs:
Radeon RX 6800M | Radeon RX 6700M | Radeon RX 6600M | |
---|---|---|---|
Computational units, shader cores | 40 / 2560 | 36 / 2304 | 28 / 1792 |
GPU clock rate | 2300 MHz | 2300 MHz | 2177 MHz |
FP32 performance | 11,8 TeraFLOPS | 10,6 TeraFLOPS | 7,8 TeraFLOPS |
Memory (GDDR6) | 12 GB | 10 GB | 8 GB |
Memory interface | 192 Bit | 160 Bit | 128 Bit |
Infinity Cache | 96 MB | 80 MB | 32 MB |
TDP | 145 watts and more | up to 135 watts | up to 100 watts |
Manufacturing process | 7 nm | 7 nm | 7 nm |
Architecture | RDNA 2 (Navi 22) | RDNA 2 (Navi 22) | RDNA 2 (Navi 23) |
The new GPU flagship 6800M is supposed to be comparable with the mobile Nvidia RTX 3080 in AAA games. In other words: a similar number of FPS, or even more. The slightly weaker Radeon RX 6700M should deliver up to 100 FPS «in popular games» at 1440p. In addition, the 6600M will apparently offer «epic» 1080p gaming.
The following image shows the FPS values with a Radeon RX 6800M at 1440p and highest quality settings. Keep the «up to» in mind. Which components are used besides the GPU isn’t specified:
More precise and, above all, independent performance benchmarks will be released soon. The new graphics card series will appear in first AMD Advantage notebooks from the beginning of June.
AMD Advantage notebook?
The company further announced a design framework initiative with AMD Advantage. This is to encourage manufacturers to add certain features to gaming notebooks. All with the goal of achieving a high standard of quality.
The following components are required when making an «AMD Advantage Notebook»:
- A mobile AMD Ryzen 5000 processor, Radeon RX 6000M graphics card and Radeon software.
- Support for AMD’s Smart Access Memory and Smart Shift technology.
- Minimum display requirements: 300 cd/m² brightness, 100 per cent sRGB colour space or 72 per cent NTSC colour space coverage, 144 Hz refresh rate with low latency and AMD Freesync.
- At least one NVMe PCIe Gen 3 SSD is installed.
- A maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius near the WASD keys.
- A battery managing 10 hours of video playback.
Aside from the battery life, these are relatively clear announcements to manufacturers. And they seem to be listening to AMD: the first laptop to fulfil all these points will be an Asus ROG Strix G15. Available from sometime in June.
