Perfect make-up despite summer heat

Translation: Octavia Hurst

When temperatures rise, make-up melts off the face. Counteract the heat-related demise of your make-up with these tips.

In summer, I love to experiment with make-up. If only it weren’t for the heat. The high temperatures make me feel like I’m sweating my make-up off my face right after applying. Luckily, I have some tricks up my sleeve.

Mattifying primers and creams on oily areas

Depending on your skin type, areas such as the T-zone tend to become oily more quickly. Sprinkle in some sweat, and your make-up is put through the wringer. Apply a mattifying primer or a mattifying, fast-absorbing cream to these areas before you put on make-up. They keep your sebum production in check throughout the day.

Powder – under the make-up

In addition or as an alternative to mattifying primers and skincare products, wear powder under foundation. Sounds weird, I know. Especially since a basic rule in make-up is liquids first, then powder. Be a rule breaker.

Apply a fine powder sparingly over your primer using dabbing motions. But only in places that quickly become oily. The powder acts as a buffer and absorbs the oil throughout the day. Use a transparent powder only. So please, no brightening powder or even a covering powder foundation. Then spray with a setting spray. You’ll set the applied powder and it literally melts into your skin. Once your face is dry again, apply your foundation. Make sure to work your foundation into the powdered areas with dabbing motions. Either with a make-up sponge or a brush. This keeps the powder layer intact. Finally, set the foundation with powder. If your skin is dry, don’t use this powder technique.

Setting spray after each step

A setting spray is often used at the very end of the make-up process. As a final step, similar to hairspray. Or as explained above, to set the powder under the make-up. If you want your make-up to be extra sweat-proof, use the spray after each make-up step. That’s after primer, foundation, bronzer, blush and highlighter. Let your face dry briefly after applying each layer before continuing to add make-up. For this technique, it’s best to use a spray with a mattifying effect, which extends the wear time of your make-up. The «All-Nighter Make-Up Setting Spray» by Urban Decay or the «Primer Oil-Control Matt Fixing Spray» by Catrice are good examples.

Blotting powder or sheets for touch-ups

Coloured make-up products such as lipstick, blush and bronzer are easy to touch up. The tricky one is the foundation. To keep fresh for as long as possible, use a translucent powder or blotting sheets around every two hours. Both mattify your complexion without ruining your make-up.

If you use powder, use the sponge provided and work the powder sparingly into the skin with pressing movements. Blotting sheets are fast, simple and there’s no need for a mirror. These are small pieces of paper that you press onto your skin for a few seconds. The paper absorbs the excess oil. That’s not very appetising, but very practical.

Of course, even with these tips, your make-up won’t last forever. But the wearing time is extended significantly. In general, I advise applying lighter make-up in the summer. The fewer layers, the longer they stay in place.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
