«The age of electronics is over» – the year 2022 in quotes

David Lee
28.12.2022

To wrap up the year gone by, we took some time to reflect. I’ve put together some contemplative words for you to showcase this vibe.

Hindsight is easier than foresight. The authors of these quotes were unaware they were creating words for eternity. Quotes that are worth thinking about and that come from great thinkers – namely us editors.

Killing with a knife is not only quicker, but also more fun.
Domagoj Belancic, December 2022

The man who wrote this seems friendly, almost jovial with his Bernese dialect. He enjoys walking his dog and championing the causes of people with disabilities. A thoroughly nice person – or so it seems. But don’t let that fool you. When Domi immerses himself in a game like «High on Life», he turns into a killing machine.

They’re still all cold-blooded killers, yes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have board game nights with homemade enchiladas together.
Philipp Rüegg, August 2022

It appears Phil has known for quite some time that you can be a murderer and likeable at the same time. At least in the virtual world of
«Saints Row».

The age of electronics is over.
David Lee, November 2022

Admittedly, this is a bold statement. Having said that, nobody’s contradicted it yet. Which proves once again: all you need is good arguments. Or to be clear that you’re not being serious. Besides, I needed an excuse to test an eraser.

The upper part of the goat is modular.
Livia Gamper, March 2022

Okay. I think there’s nothing more to add here. On second thought, I wasn’t aware goats had an upper part. You live and learn, eh? By the way, the article containing the quote is about a robot from Kawasaki that’s supposed to represent a goat.

You can save yourself the trip to Ikea.
Kevin Hofer, September 2022

This statement works so well out of context, because it’s so true. No matter how old you are, how much money you have, if you’ve just moved, or if your in-laws are from Sweden – you can save yourself the trip to Ikea. That includes if you were looking to buy a multi-latch to physically connect two screens.

But who cares about that.
Luca Fontana, April 2022

This profound quote might be inspired by Luca’s idol – feisty Swiss journalist and celebrity Roger «Who cares» Schawinski. Or maybe not. Who cares. The article containing the quote is about Netflix. The streaming provider’s resourceful data collectors have figured something out. Something to do with 74 per cent. But 74 per cent of what? Who cares.

After all these years, there’s just one thing I’ve forgotten how to do: think first, then write.
David Lee, October 2022

I’m not the only one with this problem, a quick scan of the internet reveals. But that doesn’t make it better. After all, writing is my profession. At least the articles I churn out are proofread multiple times and corrected before they go online. As a result, I may even occasionally end up writing something after thinking. By the way, I came up with the quote while trying to write a business letter by hand.

Right, that was it. I’m off to write all the articles for 2023 and then spend the next year thinking about which ones to publish.

My interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I want to know how we can use technology without being used. Outside of the office, I’m a keen musician who makes up for lacking talent with excessive enthusiasm.
