What our film and game editors are saying about The Super Mario Bros. Movie
by Luca Fontana
After just one month, "The Super Mario Bros Movie" has generated one billion dollars in sales. This makes the Mario film by far the most successful video game adaptation of all time.
The "Super Mario Bros Film" is unstoppable. Around four weeks after its cinema release, Mario's colourful adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom has grossed one billion dollars worldwide. Of this, 490 million was generated in the USA and 532 million dollars outside the United States. There is no end in sight to the wave of success - the film was only released in Japan and South Korea last week.
This makes "The Super Mario Bros Movie" the most successful release in the 2023 cinema year to date. It is also already the tenth most successful animated film and by far the most successful video game adaptation of all time. The plumber easily leaves gaming greats such as "Pokémon", "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Angry Birds" in his wake. The top ten currently looks like this:
At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a public voting score of 96% with over 10,000 votes. In comparison, the trade press gave Mario's animated debut a very poor score of 59%.
Film producer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto even believes that the poor reviews have contributed to the film's immense success
What Luca, Michelle, Phil and I have to say about the film can be read here:
The Super Mario Bros Movie is not only a success at the cinema. Last week, the full-length film was uploaded several times on Twitter. This was made possible by the new upload function for Twitter Blue subscribers. This allows video clips of up to one hour to be uploaded in high quality.
The clips generated millions of views until they were only discovered and deleted after several days (!), as Musk had previously fired a large part of Twitter's security and compliance team. Anyone who knows Nintendo knows that it's better not to mess with the Japanese video game giant when it comes to copyright https://www.theverge.com/2021/12/8/22823767/team-xecuter-gary-bowser-nintendo-lawsuit-10-million.
"The Super Mario Bros Movie is a huge success. Nintendo has many more franchises that could also be made into films. Which games do you want to see on the big screen?
The competition has ended.
My love of video games was unleashed at the tender age of five by the original Gameboy. Over the years, it's grown in leaps and bounds.
