Game highlights in October
Which game are you looking forward to the most?

Racing in a galaxy far, far away, zoo management, and a showdown with Dracula await you in October.
Ten years ago, it was «Titanfall 2» that sweetened October with a sensational campaign. On top of that, there was the first-class multiplayer. Will anyone manage such a double whammy this month?
October begins with the dark sci-fi action adventure «End of Abyss». You play as the battle-hardened technician Cel, who explores an eerie underground facility full of creepy monsters. Looks very atmospheric.
When: October 1st
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: no
This sci-fi action game is significantly more humorous. A space station is swallowed by a black hole and subsequently overrun by all sorts of mutants. You are the janitor and at the same time humanity's last hope in this 70s B-movie setting.
When: October 1st
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
Spectacular airplane action, a crazy anime-style story with a touch of social criticism, and the most beautiful clouds of all time: I was already enthusiastic about the latest «Ace Combat» installment in my preview. The game should really take off.
When: October 2nd
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: Online PvP and co-op
A spectacularly looking MMO in a huge fantasy world that is said to be 36 times larger than that of its predecessor. Looks absolutely epic. It is free-to-play, which is usually both a blessing and a curse.
When: October 5th
Where: PC
Multiplayer: Online PvP and co-op
The latest «Gears» is set 14 years before the first part. Here you experience how the Locust Horde overran the world. It looks visually stunning, but gameplay-wise it doesn't seem to break new ground. Which is great if you like controlling people who are as agile as a tractor. If you prefer faster machines, then check out the next tip.
When: October 6th
Where: PC, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: PvP and co-op, online and local
For our «Star Wars» superfan, it was already the game of the year before the hands-on session at Gamescom. Afterwards, Luca couldn't be stopped. For him, «Galactic Racer» is a childhood dream come true. But even non-«Star Wars» fans should enjoy this spectacular racing game.
When: October 6th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: Online PvP
The revival of 80s horror icons continues. Michael Myers is followed by Pinhead and his sadistic Cenobite buddies. The game tells a new story in the universe created by Clive Barker. Look forward to plenty of bare skin, sometimes on the body, sometimes not.
When: October 8th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
As private detective Red Walker, you are tasked with finding a missing musician in the titular town in the middle of nowhere. You quickly find yourself in a nightmarish world from which you try to escape using a mix of combat, puzzles, and crafting.
When: October 8th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 1, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
Peaceful, but probably no less emotional, is how «Forever Ago» sounds. After a stroke of fate, you embark on a road trip where you meet all sorts of interesting people and capture new memories with your camera.
When: October 8th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
Simon praised it to the skies in his preview. The latest game from «The Witness» creator Jonathan Blow is set to be another absolute puzzle feast that will make heads smoke.
When: October 8th
Where: PC, PS5, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
The expansion for the unusual action RPG brings new challenges and a new story. During my hands-on session at Gamescom, it didn't take long before the first fight against a gigantic troll with mammoth tusks occurred. It immediately spiraled out of control; I fell off cliffs, harpies attacked me in the air, and huge feet trampled wolves – it was glorious.
When: October 9th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
The studio behind the fast-paced action platformer series «Ghostrunner» is venturing into a Soulslike. «Valor Mortis» is set in a parallel universe where you, as a former soldier of Napoleon, fight all sorts of monsters with supernatural powers. I was able to play it at the penultimate Gamescom and found the unusual setting particularly exciting. But the action was also intense. Prepare yourself for many deaths.
When: October 13th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: no
Just look at all these cute animals – so sweet. You can almost save yourself the trip to the zoo. In the second part, you also build a home for many exotic animals – new are aquariums for saltwater and freshwater creatures. Hopefully, the micromanagement will be toned down a bit, then I'll have more time to marvel at my animal inhabitants.
When: October 13th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: no
Two champions promise more variety. Joining the sluggish Maluma is the nimble Nyra. She hacks her way through hordes of new enemies with blade and crossbow. After all, it's time again to destroy heretics in the name of the Emperor and spill liters of pixel blood.
When: October 14th
Where: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Switch 1, Switch 2¹
Multiplayer: no
Like «Snowrunner», but even more cozy: That was my impression after I tried out the game at Gamescom. In a cozy world, atmospherically staged with low-poly graphics, you cruise around with your all-wheel-drive vehicle and look for new challenges. Sometimes you want to overcome rough terrain, other times you want to tow a vehicle.
When: October 14th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch
Multiplayer: Online co-op
The creative minds behind «Dead Cells» are taking on Dracula. That can only be good. Kevin, Domi, and I played Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse at Gamescom and were all blown away. This will be a 2D action feast.
When: October 15th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 1, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
The German survival game has matured in Early Access for two years, now it's time for 1.0. I already found it brilliant at launch and am really looking forward to diving back into the magical world of Embervale. Keen Games has since polished the game significantly and added several new regions. Now I just need to find the time. «Valheim» is also constantly tugging at my sleeve.
When: October 15th (already available in Early Access)
Where: PC
Multiplayer: Online co-op
«Tenebris Somnia» offers an unusual mix of pixelated 2D horror adventure and live-action sequences with real actors. Looks like an absolute must for fans of «Phantasmagoria» and other wonderfully trashy FMV games.
When: October 16th
Where: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Switch 1, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
You play a zombie who falls in love with a corpse he wants to bring back to life. The gameplay is at least as quirky as the story. For example, you can transform into a harpy or a werewolf. Domi was quite taken with the demo and doesn't know any other game "that controls similarly and so consistently ignores defensive moves." He wasn't completely convinced, but it should definitely be kept an eye on.
When: October 21st
Where: PC, PS5
Multiplayer: no
«Octopath Traveler» introduced the captivating tilt-shift look, also known as HD-2D. «Final Fantasy Resonance» perfects it. An endless story, multi-layered characters you will recruit, and turn-based battles that require tactical skill await you. You can't say no to that, right? Or can you?
When: October 22nd
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 1, Switch 2
Multiplayer: no
It probably won't reach the heights of the original «Wii Sports», but Switch 2 owners will still work up a sweat. This is guaranteed by the motion control and numerous new mini-games such as thumb wrestling. Okay, maybe that doesn't get the heart pumping, but there are eleven other sports.
When: October 22nd
Where: Switch 2
Multiplayer: PvP, local and online
The numbering has long since become meaningless. In the estimated 17-millionth «Call of Duty», it's about stopping an invasion from North Korea. Captain Price is also back on board. Hopefully, the campaign won't be such a flop as the last one.
When: October 23rd
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2
Multiplayer: Online co-op and PvP
Not to be confused with Embervale from «Enshrouded». At first glance, it looks like the farming simulation «Stardew Valley». It is – in part. But «Emberville» offers much more. You have to rebuild a city, defeat monsters, and explore a huge world.
When: October 27th
Where: PC (Early Access)
Multiplayer: no
I've been waiting for the successor for over ten years. It's finally supposed to happen next year. Until then, I can shorten the time with the remastered version. Not that it's necessary. Visually, the game has aged well and the story about the fairy tale creatures seeking shelter from evil in our New York is still gripping. Anyone who hasn't played it yet should still grab it and look forward to improved graphics and a noir mode.
When: October 29th
Where: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Switch 1, Switch 2¹
Multiplayer: no
The Korean role-playing sensation only appeared at the beginning of the year and now the first expansion is already following. The game was already massively expanded without DLC. With «Charting the Unknown» you get your own ship and can set sail with it. Diving will also finally be possible. I have no time at all.
When: October 29th
Where: PC, PS5, Xbox Series
Multiplayer: no
I know, I know: It's the thousandth action game where you engage in spectacular-looking sword fights with monsters in an Asian-inspired fantasy world. But what the Chinese developers at S-Game are delivering here looks incredibly good.
When: October 30th
Where: PC, PS5
Multiplayer: no
¹ Switch 1 version, which is also compatible with the Switch 2.

As a child, I wasn't allowed to have any consoles. It was only with the arrival of the family's 486 PC that the magical world of gaming opened up to me. Today, I'm overcompensating accordingly. Only a lack of time and money prevents me from trying out every game there is and decorating my shelf with rare retro consoles.
