Fiber optic (LWL) patch cables allow for the connection of various network components. Applications include a direct connection between two active network ports or the shortest connection between an active network port and a passive cabling port. Different quality classes (OMx) facilitate the qualitative distinction of a fiber optic patch cable.

Value of OM5 technology: OM5 technology offers a range of improvements over previous quality classes. Previous multimode fibers are optimized for an optical window or wavelength range of 850 nm. Outside this window, signals are significantly attenuated, requiring Ethernet signals to be transmitted over multiple parallel multimode fibers. For example, two fibers are needed for 10-Gigabit Ethernet (one fiber for sending and one for receiving). In 40 or 100-Gigabit Ethernet applications, signals are transmitted over eight fibers.
