The shielding of the wires is done with a foil overall shield. Additionally, the cable features a special strain relief boot and a halogen-free jacket, which is highly flame-retardant. The completely halogen-free jacket ensures that no toxic substances can escape in the event of a fire. The strain relief boots, designed to be particularly slim, allow for comfortable cabling even with larger switches with 48 ports or more. Unlike conventional PVC cables, these cables are halogen-free: the dangerous release of halogen-containing combustion gases is thus excluded, and smoke generation is minimized. Halogen-free cables are also difficult to ignite and do not exhibit a dangerous fuse effect. In F/UTP cables, all twisted pairs are surrounded by a foil shield, meaning the overall shield consists of just one layer of foil. Shielded cables exhibit little impedance or reactance deviation compared to unshielded ones. The transmission parameters remain relatively constant even at high frequencies and are better than those of UTP cables. Cat 5 cables are used for signal transmission with high data transfer rates. The designation 5e comes from a revision of the standards ISO11801 and EN50173, which made them suitable for Gigabit Ethernet.
