As a newbie in the mesh topic, I haven't quite grasped how the interaction between the mesh network and my "old" router works. I have Salt Fiber, which, according to the description, cannot be set to bridge mode. Question now: can I still safely set up the Decos as a separate network and deactivate the Wifi of the Salt router?

This should actually work because you can connect the initial router from TP-Link to your Salt router via a network cable. In fact, there is no dependency from the previous WiFi of your Salt router to the newly created mesh network.

Deco devices can be mixed with each other, i.e. a Deco M4 with Gbit Ethernet is connected to the modem or router of the Internet provider and a less expensive Deco E4 set takes over the WLAN coverage. This prevents the Internet provider's speed from being throttled, as the E4s only have 2 x 100 Mbit Ethernet.
