Does the device need additional devices to work and be connected (if so, which ones)? Or can it simply be connected to the router to extend the signal?

As far as I remember, it is supplied with power via PoE, so the router should also be able to do that.

The UniFi products work best in a "network": a "controller" configures all devices. This controller can be a software on a PC, a Docker container on a RaspberryPi or even a physical device.
Configuring a whole fleet of these devices is actually quite convenient, but if you only want to have one, it might be a "steep learning curve" and a special case where I don't know how well it would work.
