I am thinking of switching to the DS1821+, can I simply use the existing hard drives from my current DS918+ without losing data?
Or should I buy new hard disks and copy the data directly?

Hoi, changing disks is the hardcore way - but not really the safe and correct way in my opinion. The correct way, which you also suggest, would be: Fresh disks, corresponding raid including configuration, copying of all data, test... and then work on the new NAS... (my2cents, I have 3 Synologies myself, migrated from 409+ to 414 to rs3617xs+1217 so always everything reliably and without data loss and problems). LG

His question was whether it works or not! And here the answer must be: All devices of the + series are compatible with each other. As long as the target device has more or the same number of drive slots and supports the drives. (Check the list of hardware).

You will be happy about this feature if the NAS is defective and your data is OK. You buy a new NAS (without HDD), plug in the HDD, start the NAS and it asks if you want to migrate complete or data! Here it is like this, no complete NAS is like a mirror of the old one. If you only want to migrate the data, you first have to set up the NAS correctly. But the data is there!

Alternatively, you can have 2 NAS with different tasks and store the really important data in 2 places.

Synology also supports drive migration, of course, but there is also a migration assistant if you want to build a new NAS. I would also recommend the solution with a new NAS and new disks, because then you definitely have a backup solution in case something goes wrong during the migration (but this is unlikely).

I would definitely not sell the old NAS, but continue to use it as a backup NAS, even if the space is not enough to store everything from the new NAS, you can at least use it to back up the most important data.
