Question about Synology DS1522+

Hello, I have been using a Windows server and would now like to switch to a NAS. Unfortunately, this is completely new territory for me. I would like to continue using my existing hard drives incl. content. Can I assume that the hard drives (Seagate and WD between 8 and 16 TB) are supported by this device, or do I have to check this on a case-by-case basis? The hard disks are currently simply operated as individual disks without RAID and I would like to continue doing so. I assume that the unit supports this configuration. Thanks for any tips. LG

Helpful answer

You will be able to use the hard drives in the DS1522+, but not with the data on them. I assume they are now formatted with NTFS, but the DS1522+ cannot do anything with that. Internal hard disks are operated with ext4 or BTFS.

Here is a compatibility list of Synology products:

https://www.synology.com/de-de...

If your data is important to you, then I would advise you to only use special models for NAS servers that have also been developed for 24/7 operation.
Of course, these are more expensive, but you can recognise their quality from the fact that the manufacturer gives at least a 5-year warranty even for continuous operation.

I have now bought my 5th NAS server from Synology in the last 9 years and I am absolutely satisfied. In the last 9 years, 3 hard disks have failed, but all of them could be replaced even during operation without data loss. The only thing is that no two hard disks may fail at the same time, e.g. in RAID 5 (but this is absolutely unlikely).

As a file system, always use only those that provide the greatest security and are supported by Synology -> see instructions and Internet1.

Keywords to search for suitable HDDs:

- NAS server
- 24/7 operation
- at least 5 years warranty
