I want to expand my home network and am currently considering using a Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE) for this purpose. In combination with a PoE switch, I could cover network, access points, and cameras relatively centrally. What's particularly important to me is that the system can be operated and managed locally without a cloud or internet, that, for example, camera recordings can be stored locally, and that there are ideally no ongoing license, cloud, or subscription costs. Therefore, my question to you: Is the UDM-SE still a future-proof solution in 2026, or would you rather opt for another Ubiquiti product or a solution from a different manufacturer today? What alternatives would you recommend for a home network that is as local, reliable, license-free, and long-term expandable as possible?
