Is this the smart managed variant? The product name suggests so, but the specifications are silent on this. The data sheet refers to the GS108G and not the GE. VLAN?

Yes, but that's also a confusing/clumsy naming convention.
GS108GE is unmanaged, GS108E would be managed...
The resolution here would be: http://netgear.de/...
