Netgear RAX120 Nighthawk (5G, WiFi 6)
Sorry, maybe a stupid question: I am looking for a router that connects to the 4G and in the future if possible 5G network and then provides a wifi network. I can't really make heads or tails of the descriptions. Can the Netgear RAX120 Nighthawk do this? Or do I need a different device for that? I don't want a mobile hotspot, this is supposed to be the permanent solution as the mobile network promises more bandwidth than the current terrestrial solutions.
For this, the device would need a SIM slot or eSIM. But it doesn't have one. 5G is still a thing of the future. This device can do it: ASUS 4G-AC68U
But quite apart from that, 5G is no faster than a fibre optic line. Light is always faster than any microwave... The theoretical values of 5G are not even close to being available to the end user for a very, very long time anyway. 5G will perhaps become an issue in 10 years' time, when there are enough antennas around to guarantee high speeds. But until 10 years from now, fibre optics, or the technology behind it, will also become faster.
Terrestrial would be a technology with an antenna, so it has nothing to do with cable or fibre. For comparison: DVB-C (cable), DVB-S (satellite) and DVB-T (with antenna). The T stands for terrestrial.
To cut a long story short, all this is also the reason why there are currently only mobile hotspots with 5G. It is simply not yet a real alternative to the wired fibre-optic network.
