The second volume of "The Psalms in the Church Fathers" contains commentary on Psalms 31-60. In this commentary, the authors aim less to present the thoughts of individual Fathers in a historical context and more to help the reader understand the Psalms spiritually and to pray them. The question arises repeatedly with the Psalms whether these songs of Israel are also suitable as Christian prayers. For the Fathers, the answer was clear: The Psalms are the prayer of the Church because they speak of Christ and lead us to Him. Many Christians knew several Psalms by heart. Basil mentions that Christians in his time sang Psalms at home, and they could even be heard in the marketplace. We hope that this Psalms commentary will encourage readers to learn from the Fathers, who were familiar with the Psalms and prayed them repeatedly, how the Psalms can deepen, shape, and enrich the understanding of what prayer is.
