Product details

The American-British architect, architecture and systems theorist with Viennese roots, Christopher Alexander, is primarily known for his groundbreaking books "A Pattern Language" and "A Timeless Way of Building." The Eishin School and University campus (1983-1989) near Tokyo is the largest project that Alexander has realized based on "A Pattern Language." Another significant part of Alexander's philosophical work is the theory of living systems. The new book examines this theory comprehensively for the first time using the example of the Eishin campus. Experts from the fields of architecture, natural sciences, cultural studies, and humanities from both Western and Japanese cultural contexts shed light on Alexander's thinking and its implementation in built architecture, considering aspects of relevance, interdisciplinarity, internationality, and cultural transfer.
