2. Achter Herbst ohne Haus

A West German family in the 1970s. When the father talks about the war, time dissolves. When he prays, the food goes cold. Mother and children have learned to endure in silence. One day, they are placed in a silence of a special kind. Due to the delayed move to a new house, a temporary accommodation had to be found for the mother and her three youngest children, Ines, Matthias, and Hanna. The convent where the oldest sister Clara lives becomes a refuge. Good twenty years later, Hanna remembers that autumn in the mysterious world of the nuns, the father's visits to the convent, and the revelations that threaten to tear the family apart.

3. Achter Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar

The dignity of man is inviolable. Article 1 of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany allows no room for interpretation. But what does reality look like? Does this imperative hold as unequivocally there? A rhetorical question, to be sure. The dignity of man is violated in many places, sometimes intentionally, often because circumstances are as they are. There are many stories to tell about this, which is why we have announced the prize of the Weinheim Literature Festival 2024 on this topic. In this book, we present the best 8 stories.

4. Achter Nea Brunn

Hope is green and it dies last. At least, these are certainties about this undifferentiated feeling of hope. In this book, we present eight perspectives on hope, as diverse as the authors themselves. We showcase the best eight stories from the writing competition for the Weinheim Literature Festival prize. Four of the eight publication spots in this book were reserved for authors (of course also for male authors) under 25 years old, as the Weinheim Literature Festival and Achter Verlag aim to contribute to the promotion of young talent.

5. Achter The world was faster than words

A woman travels around the world. Alone. In the 19th century. In Paris, 100 years later, another woman stands in the kitchen. With her lover. In the living room, mother, husband, and children are waiting. It is Christmas, essentially the festival of love. Judith Arlt has intertwined the life paths of these two women into a novel that shifts between times and continents. The literary inspiration for the world-traveling Carolina is Lina Bögli, who came from the Swiss countryside and traveled alone to distant lands around 1900. As the first woman, she ascended the Hawaiian volcano Haleakala on foot. However, she left the love of her life behind in Krakow. Irène, the woman from Paris, also breaks free from the constraints of the petty bourgeoisie and embarks on a quest for her roots in Poland.

7. Achter Sabine Hey

Anja Liedtke and Achim Stegmüller spent August 2022 in Merano as part of the Franz Edelmaier Residency Scholarship for Human Rights. They traveled from Bochum and Kyoto. Short and highly contrasting texts recount their approach to Merano. Whether on hikes in the highlands, through the appropriation of the surroundings via literature and science, or during walks in the city, insights into the cultural landscape unfold. As diverse as the perspectives and thoughts are the forms of the texts. A dialogue gradually develops between the newcomers in the city and the surrounding landscape, as well as between the texts and motifs. This conversation about the relationship between humans and nature, and the literary engagement with it, is further explored by the visual artist Sabine Hey in her illustrations.

8. Achter Michiel Postma

The author is certainly not among the 10,000 best cyclists in the country. The figure of 10,000 is a rather positive estimate; one could even add another zero. But what to do when talent is lacking? Well, one must try to convince the audience or fellow racers of their qualities on the racing bike in other ways. For this, the author is willing to push the limits. Necessarily, he focuses on the fringes of cycling, hoping to gain a bit of honor in the process. One might think of the use of cycling protection cartridges, natural doping, crossing boundaries, huge mustaches, reversed race numbers, or practicing various celebration techniques, because in the end, you never know...

9. Achter Wasser

Water is the number one food, a compound made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Without water, there would be no life. Water can be the purest pleasure and the greatest horror. With that, we want to leave behind the mundane descriptions. "I love water because it is the heaven I can touch." In her characteristically poetic manner, Fredrike Frei reflects on water. She has sifted through her books and manuscripts and allowed her imagination to run free. "No wave warns the other. Like lemmings, they run to their doom, pushing each other forward, stumbling over themselves, fading away in happiness, not just in ..., but being water." An ode to the elixir of life, water, in literary miniatures - sip by sip, so to speak. The little book is illustrated by Jessica Füllenbach, who has empathetically transformed Frederike Frei's texts into images.

10. Achter Das endlos weite Blau

The endlessly vast blue tells the story of the aging baby boomers. This is the generation that believed they would never grow old, only to suddenly realize how relentlessly time ticks away. Nevertheless, the novel is not a tearful endgame, but rather a rock-and-roll road novel that is anything but sad. What can happen when two adventurous sixty-year-olds set off as if they were 18 again? On their trip south, they first pick up a young transgender person, then a feisty ex-girlfriend. They find themselves in one bizarre situation after another, partly fueled by their alcohol and drug consumption. But ultimately, their defiant youthful attitude cannot shield them from the realization that their time is not infinite. Their wild journey in southern France culminates in a rather turbulent and surprising ending. The novel is narrated in the playful tone of a buddy movie, thriving on the escapades of its protagonists, their unabashed, cheeky dialogues, and their sassy, provocative comments. The rock music of the 70s and 80s also plays a significant role and serves as a constant companion on a journey that literally leads into the blue.
