The Handbook of Moral, an ancient collection of wisdom and life rules from the great Stoic philosopher, has maintained its significance as a book of comfort throughout the centuries. In the consistency and coherence of its ethical teachings, it appears not only as a pinnacle of Greek philosophy but also as a timeless and thought-provoking guide to living that aims to lead one to clear thinking, insightful willing, and rational action. The dialogues, recordings of Epictetus's teaching conversations with his students, provide a vivid picture of the philosopher's religiously serious demeanor and his quick-wittedness rooted in everyday life, as well as his personal humility and love for humanity. Newly translated and edited by Christof Rapp.

Originally intended for personal use, a historical stroke of luck saved the self-reflections of Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD): a timeless work of humanity, life wisdom, and self-determination. Read for centuries as a "strengthening agent" (Nietzsche), they still offer a path to serenity, to harmony with oneself and the world today. The Kröner edition has also been a faithful companion to Helmut Schmidt for decades.
The title is also available in regular print.

In a time when China is becoming increasingly important, it is also increasingly essential to understand China. There is still much to be done. Einführung in die Elastizitäts- und Festigkeitslehre
German, Dietmann, Herbert(Dr.-Ing.), 1992
Using the example of the impact of critical aspects of modern employment on the health of employees, Johannes Siegrist documents the role of intensive interdisciplinary collaboration in research and practice between social science and medical research. The focus is on recurring experiences of a recognition crisis, meaning an imbalance between performance delivered and material as well as immaterial rewards. As experiences perceived as violations penetrate deeply, they increase the risk of physical or mental illness. The conclusion includes recommendations for promoting healthy work, aimed primarily at businesses and organizations, but also directed towards policymakers.

The starting point of ethics is moral beliefs. Moral beliefs pertain to what is good, which actions are morally unacceptable, what distribution can be considered just, and so on. Ethical theory seeks to develop general criteria for good, right, just, etc., that align with the moral beliefs we share and that seem indispensable to us. On the other hand, they provide guidance in cases where our moral views are uncertain or even contradictory. An introductory booklet on ethics by Julian Nida-Rümelin, based on applied ethics, is his standard work on ethics that has accompanied generations of students through their studies. It is intended for philosophy students, ethics teachers, and all others professionally engaged in the field.

After Aeschylus and Sophocles, the collection of the three great tragedians is now complete with Euripides. In fact, he managed to surpass his famous predecessors in terms of popularity. His literary significance extends to the present day, and he is indispensable on German stages. J.J. Donner's classic translation is particularly notable for respecting the ancient meter. The only complete edition of the surviving dramas of Euripides in the German language is published in two volumes. Volume II contains the two Iphigenia dramas, Medea, the Phoenician Women, the Suppliants, the Trojan Women, Ion, and Orestes, as well as the satyr play The Cyclops. Bernhard Zimmermann's informative foreword, separate introductions to each of the included dramas, afterthoughts on the conditions of creation and performance of ancient drama, family trees, and glossaries are also included.

The new "Wilpert" provides answers to questions about Goethe in around 4000 entries. The encyclopedia informs about all the essential people, work titles, things, locations, and terms from Goethe's life, work, and world that are still of interest today: individuals from Goethe's circle and experience, the places he frequented or chose as settings for his writings, themes, characters, and literary forms of his works, as well as the key concepts of his worldview and scientific thinking.

Montaigne lived in a time when he said he often lay down, unsure if he would be killed that night, and his philosophy was: being prepared is everything, even for such a fate. Such a fate could also befall us; we might also need such a philosophy. But let it be as it may. It is never out of place, in a world where we must allow ourselves to be consumed like machine parts, to get to know a complete human being. It is never out of place to make the acquaintance of a fundamentally wise, honest, lovable, and magnificent man. This was written by Paul Sakmann at the end of 1932 in his introduction to the Montaigne volume intended for the Montaigne Year 1933; this tribute was reprinted unchanged even in 1939. The beautiful translation by Paul Sakmann wonderfully captures the tone of Montaigne.

Montaigne über sich selbst
German, Michel de Montaigne, Paul Sakmann, Regine Brossmann, 2013
The rapid development of the digital world has also revolutionized scientific and literary work. Our perceptions of the value of intellectual labor are in flux. Public debates about plagiarism surrounding the copy-paste mentality of cases like Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg or Silvia Koch-Mehrin, as well as discussions in literature regarding Helene Hegemann, alongside the recurring advocacy for open access, have brought the question of whether the digital age requires a new understanding of copyright to the forefront of societal and political attention. Philipp Theisohn's essay seeks to explore the causes of this development in the fields that are central to the current discussion about literary theft: in the realms of art, politics, and science. In contrast to the emerging dehumanization of the engagement with literature, Theisohn presents a plea for a more humane approach.
