Yes, that should work. I don't know the difference to the Windows EDU version in detail but during my studies we got access to MSDNAA and there are also Windows 10 Pro versions. As far as I know, it is now also possible to upgrade between the versions by simply replacing the product key.

The initial key may not have been a "real key" but a fake key. Another option is to do a complete reinstallation with W10 Home and then upgrade, or much easier to use a full OEM version that is not much more expensive.
