Hi Zämä The basic discussion is already in the title. Briefly about my situation, I have a 4 TB external hard drive (Toshiba min. 5 years old) on which I create a weekly backup via Windows and a system image so that I have a backup in the event of a Windows crash or whatever else happens. Now the 4 TB are already full so that I can no longer make the backup. I would continue to make the backup on the hard drive and also important files/photos etc. for me personally. but only the important ones otherwise I use the Google Cloud (yes, that's true for me :D) Then it occurred to me that I actually need a second hard drive in case the first one crashes. Now to the question: Should I get two WD elements (example) and back up the whole thing that way or should I get a NAS? I've been tempted to buy a NAS for a while, but I've always rejected it because I know that I won't use it enough in the end. And yet it wouldn't be bad for a backup, but only for the backup and a few files/photos. As you can see, I'm torn. I'm also not a layman in the whole thing or shy away from the effort involved in a NAS. I just need some input from the dear Community now, maybe something good will come out of it. My Plex Media Server is used by 2-3 users at the same time, so sufficient performance for parallel streams is important. Do you have any recommendations for a powerful NAS that fulfils my requirements? What do you think of Ugreen?

Synology has now completely shot the bird. First they only allow their own hard drives and now they are also disabling hardware encoding (by removing the corresponding drivers) for certain models. Mind you, this is after users have already purchased the NAS systems and were prepared to buy the overpriced hard drives from Synology.

Hello, there are different sets of Synology DS224+ with different hard drives from different manufacturers. What are the differences and which HD do you recommend, especially from which manufacturer? I am looking for a NAS to store my many RAW files, i.e. the database (catalogue) remains on the PC, the files come from the NAS. As the database is on the PC, the RAWs are only read after they have been written once to the NAS. I have read that RAID 10 is much faster than RAID 5 in read access (and that is what matters). What configuration and models can you recommend here, there is around 8TB of data and I need a rack unit?

Dear Community, I have massive problems with my QNAP TS-873A NAS under QuTS. This manifests itself as follows: 1. speed problems. I sometimes have to wait 2-3 minutes for the web interface to load. 2. the pool cleanup is set to be performed every three months always on the 1st of the month, yesterday it started for no apparent reason. 3. the programme HBS3. The daily synchronisation with my Nextcloud takes several up to 12 hours a day, although only minimal changes that take place in the MB range. 4. the restart times under QuTS are 30 minutes, which is extremely annoying. The QNAP TS-873A 02/2024 has the following specs: - TS-873A (BIOS Q07DAR15) - Operating system QuTS 5.1.5.2647 - 64GB RAM (2x CT2K32G4SFD832A) - 7x Toshiba 16TB HDD (MG08ACA16TE) in RAID 6 array over-provisioning with 10% - 2x WD Red SN700 NVMe SSD 1 TB as NVME volume for Docker, a Windows VM (GB RAM) and Emby database - 2x WD Red SN700 NVMe SSD 1 TB (read cache and synchronous ZIL I/O write protocol) - NVIDIA Quadro P400 (for Emby) - QuTS hero 5.1.4.2647 - UPS EATON Ellipse ECO 800 I have been in contact with QNAP support since September last year and have already tried a few things and completed several remote sessions. Hello all I want to swear off streaming services and get my own media server at my home. I have already read quite a bit on the topic. Plex is apparently very popular for running your own video library. Intentions: - In the end, up to three devices (TV's 2x4k, 1xFullHD) at home should be able to stream simultaneously. - I want to build, install and set up the necessary NAS myself. This is because it's fun for me and I'm very excited about the challenge :) - In the end, the whole thing should not cost too much more than an off-the-shelf product (Synology etc.), the time and grey hairs for setting it up don't matter. Existing: - Each device is already connected via LAN (Cat6). - My network: Swisscom router -> switch (Zyxel GS1200-8 IPTV) -> receiver. Max. Port speed switch: 1 Gbps At the moment I am a little overwhelmed as to where to start planning the whole thing. From the end (receiving device) to the beginning (NAS), or vice versa. The following questions are currently burning: - In general: Is my project feasible as an interested layman or is your finger way? - Is the current speed of the SWITCH sufficient for max. 3 simultaneous streams? - Do I need a 10 Gbps connection on the NAS? - Which operating system is suitable for my project? - Is it best to use an additional NAS to back up the video library? The network is the bottleneck with all NAS. I would never buy a 1Gbits NAS when 10Gbits NAS are already available. A filter would be helpful!

Hello together I would like to set up a NAS in my home. Due to the large number of offers, I can no longer see the forest for the trees. I will soon be replacing my Surface with a Macbook. To do this, I want to load all the old data from my Surface onto the NAS, with the idea of being able to access it easily from the Macbook. The NAS should be accessible via the internet, similar to a private cloud. This is mainly for pictures and documents. I would also like to use the NAS as a backup together with Time Machine. It would be great if I could also access the pictures/documents with my iPhone. My budget is +/- CHF 400. Regarding the size of the hard drives, my Macbook has 1TB of storage. How much should there be at least to have a RAID 1 with enough reserve? Maybe my idea is unrealistic, but thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi, My DS1512+ is already a few years old and since I want to upgrade my home network to 10Gbit, I also need a new NAS. I need the NAS 99% as a backup solution for any devices. 1% for films via Plex. I don't really care if it's a QNAP or a Synlology again, the only important thing for me would be 10Gbit directly installed and the possibility to use SSD Chache. I don't really care whether it's 4 or 5 bay. Thank you very much!

Hello people I currently have a NAS from Synology (DS214 play). I am already satisfied, but I would like to have one with SSD because of the volume and 4k read. With pictures it is really tedious until all a few thousand are loaded. What do you recommend? I've also seen a NAS enclosure somewhere with 2.5 inch bays which would of course save space. Apart from films, there is also room for audio (despite Spotify) and of course pictures as well as exe. It doesn't really serve me as a backup, i.e. what's on the NAS doesn't have to be on my PC. But I can imagine using an external HDD for it. But what is a Raid for? ;) Maybe someone can give me some tips and what I should look out for :) LG & Thanks

Hello everyone I am using a Swisscom Internet Box 2 to which I have connected an external hard drive via USB. This hard disk is recognised in my network as a NAS. The Swisscom box also runs a media server with Dlna functionality. Unfortunately, Swisscom is discontinuing the NAS service at the end of this month. I was very satisfied with the previous solution. I would now like to integrate a NAS with Dlna server into the network with as little financial and technical effort as possible. Access from outside the WLAN is not necessary. What kind of device do I need for the described functionality? The hard disk can be in the unit or external. The device itself should not be too large. Storage requirements are not that high, < 1 TB, min 100 GB. Thanks for your tips. Gladly A Also how to integrate the device into the network.

I'm missing the filtering by processor for network storage. I'm thinking of running Roon Server on a NAS, but it would have to have at least an Intel i3 processor, better still i5 or i7. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thank you very much.

I have been thinking about getting a NAS for my home. But I don't know which one is suitable for me. I'm a normal user type, would like to use the stuff "only" as data storage (mainly photos, documents etc.) at the beginning. Then I would have all my stuff in the same place. The important thing is that I can access it from anywhere without cables (Net). Whether Synology or WD is better, I don't know. According to reviews Synology is better, but also more expensive. Is it still worth buying one? I would love to read some feedback from you.

Hello together My 13 year old daughter has a notorious lack of space on her iPhone phone because of photos and videos.... I always hear that she has too little space :-) Mimimimi... And deleting from the phone is of course impossible :-) Is there a simple if possible "child-friendly" solution to store the photos and videos on my Synology NAS? (There is more than enough space there) It would be nice to upload via WLAN and delete the photos and videos on the mobile phone. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions, or even solutions with instructions? I am all ears :-) Thanks a lot

Dear all The hard drive of our AirPort Time Capsule is defective (and was too small anyway). Now I need a replacement. As far as I have found out so far, I need a WLAN router and a separate NAS. NAS wish list: - 2 hard disks RAID1, each 6 or 8 TB - Time Machine capable, for 4 family members - easy installation - ideally no fixed partition per family member, as the storage needs of the individual people vary - can also be used as a "normal" hard drive in the home network - no external data access necessary (i.e. from outside the network, via internet) And is there anything special about the WLAN router, or does everyone work with a NAS?
