2. Aschendorff Storia regionale del rito bizantino

"Regional History of the Byzantine Rite" is a comprehensive scholarly book that explores the history and development of the Byzantine Rite, one of the most widely practiced liturgical traditions in the world. This book, the first of a two-volume work, highlights the origins of the rite, which are rooted in an Antiochene context, and its subsequent elaboration by the Church of Constantinople, which endowed it with unique characteristics. It examines how the Byzantine Rite, after solidifying its liturgical identity, underwent an evolution comparable to that of the major urban centers of Late Antiquity. The work offers a synthesis of existing research and aims to identify reliable data while also addressing questions that remain unanswered. It is aimed at readers seeking a deeper understanding of the complex history and reforms of the Byzantine Rite and its liturgical, secular, and monastic practices.

3. Aschendorff Weischer:Üöwer'n Gaorentuun

Theo Weischer, a long-time teacher and school principal, describes everyday life in his book 'Üöwer'n Gaorentuun' not in a flat dialect. It features fine Münsterland Low German, through which readers learn about the highs and lows of life, about troubles and fears, joys and sadness. Life truths and wisdom, written in poetry and prose from 1989 to 2020, touch the heart and occasionally bring a smile. Reflective passages prompt contemplation, as shown in the concluding verses of the New Year's poem: "And everyone asks and thinks, what will the new year bring - that new year. Here, let us now guarantee, give courage and peace and joy. Sing the new year." This cannot be expressed so easily in standard German. Accompanying Theo Weischer's poems and stories are drawings by Matthias Weischer, the author's youngest son. A graduate of the Academy of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig and an internationally successful painter, he has rediscovered the landscape of the Münsterland for this book with pencil and watercolor pad. With Matthias Weischer's drawings and the high-quality Low German literature written by Theo Weischer, a precious work has been created. Ludger Bügener, emeritus pastor.

5. Aschendorff Deutsche', 'Holländer', und 'Grafschafter'

The book examines the construction of regional identity(ies) in the County of Bentheim from 1866 to 1918. In 1866, the region, which had been an independent territory for centuries as an imperial county, was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia. It illustrates which aspects designated as regional specifics of the County of Bentheim were used during this period to construct region-related identity(ies) and how they were perceived by the Bentheim population, thereby influencing the self-identification of large parts of the population. It highlights that it was primarily the shared history of the once-independent imperial county of Bentheim, the Reformed confession of the majority population, the linguistic affinity to Dutch, the influence of its border location, and the associated economic and personal ties with the Netherlands, as well as the princely house as a socially significant symbol of original sovereignty and regional traditions, that were deemed relevant. Furthermore, it also examines the measures taken to harmonize these regional identity(ies) with a (Prussian) state and (German) national identity in the sense of multiple identity(ies).

6. Aschendorff Münster - Kleine Stadtgeschichte

From Charlemagne to the beginning of the third millennium, periods of peace, growth, and prosperity have accompanied the city just as much as disasters, war, misery, and oppression. Each era and generation has shaped its face, sometimes imperceptibly, sometimes profoundly. Even today, Münster is undergoing a noticeable transformation process. The all-encompassing change, which previously began a little later than in other regions, is now causing sustainable and increasingly rapid changes. Much that was familiar, including the Westphalian image of the city, is no longer as present. Instead, Münster today proudly ranks among the top cities in Germany in nationwide surveys regarding attractiveness, often taking the lead position in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the past, architectural highlights shaped opinions, but later the living environment, educational opportunities, and leisure, cultural, or consumer offerings took center stage. All of this has made Münster more self-confident. And yet, over the centuries, the Prinzipalmarkt and the Town Hall have consistently symbolized the unmistakable, enduring landmark of the city. Nowhere else is the character and style of Münster, as depicted on the cover image, more clearly visible than there.

7. Aschendorff Die Psalmen bei den Kirchenvätern. Psalmen 31-60

The second volume of "The Psalms in the Church Fathers" contains commentary on Psalms 31-60. In this commentary, the authors aim less to present the thoughts of individual Fathers in a historical context and more to help the reader understand the Psalms spiritually and to pray them. The question arises repeatedly with the Psalms whether these songs of Israel are also suitable as Christian prayers. For the Fathers, the answer was clear: The Psalms are the prayer of the Church because they speak of Christ and lead us to Him. Many Christians knew several Psalms by heart. Basil mentions that Christians in his time sang Psalms at home, and they could even be heard in the marketplace. We hope that this Psalms commentary will encourage readers to learn from the Fathers, who were familiar with the Psalms and prayed them repeatedly, how the Psalms can deepen, shape, and enrich the understanding of what prayer is.

8. Aschendorff Joachim Smet

The Carmelite Order has a handbook in Joachim Smets' work "The Carmelites: A History of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel," which can be regarded as a classic representation of the history of the Order. The four volumes – with the third volume divided into two parts – are the result of his more than forty years of research. His account covers the history from the beginnings of the hermits at the source of Elijah on Mount Carmel in the 12th century to the year 1950. In the first volume, presented here in German translation of the second edition of the English original, Smet outlines the origins of the hermit order in Palestine, the migration to Europe, and its development into a mendicant order. Another focus is an overview of the renewal of religious life in the late Middle Ages, where he discovers the "return to the spirit of the origins" with the protagonists of the order reform. A chapter on the Carmelites at the Council of Trent concludes the volume. For this original English edition published in 1988, as well as for the subsequent volumes, updates on the state of research, comments, and references to more recent literature were deemed necessary. An image appendix, which references Smet's account, complements the text.

9. Aschendorff Franziskus von Assisi

Francis of Assisi continues to hold great fascination today, with knowledge of the saint extending far beyond the church. However, understanding who Francis was, 800 years later, is not so straightforward. The temporal distance complicates comprehension, and subsequent generations have placed their own diverse emphases on Francis, creating varying images of the saint. In this masterful book, André Vauchez has succeeded in highlighting both the life and the work and impact of Francis in an outstanding manner. The award-winning title was first published in France in 2009, followed by an English translation in 2012. On the occasion of the Balzan Prize being awarded to André Vauchez, this book was recognized as the culmination of Vauchez's explorations in the field of medieval religious worldviews. His portrayal of the life, work, and impact of Francis of Assisi brings to life one of the most colorful and influential figures of the Middle Ages, who has left a deep imprint on collective memory, while also lucidly tracing the development of the myth that has formed around his figure. This impressive account of Francis of Assisi is now also available in German translation.

10. Aschendorff Formen und Dimensionen der Resilienz unter deutscher Besatzung 1939-1945

Hans Georg Calmeyer from Osnabrück (1903-1972) worked in the German administration of the occupied Netherlands during World War II. He saved nearly 3,000 Jewish men and women from certain death, but he also issued negative decisions in several hundred cases, thereby contributing to their deportation and death. Based on the structural conditions of the Nazi administration in the occupied territories, the essays examine the possibilities and limitations of rescue actions in occupied Europe between 1939 and 1945, using Calmeyer and other actors as examples. How are their biographies to be historically classified and evaluated from today's perspective? The concluding panel discussion focuses on questions of remembrance and the transmission of historical actions in the present.
